102-Year-Old Josie Dances Into Longevity with Fred Astaire Moves!

Josie, a remarkable woman from Yorkshire, has just celebrated her 102nd birthday, and she credits her love of dancing as a key reason for her long and happy life. Josie did not start dancing as a child or young adult. Instead, she took up tap and ballet at the age of 60, inspired by her lifelong admiration for famous dancers like Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly. She joined a dance school in York, where her teacher, Ms Dunn, encouraged her and told her that age was not a barrier to learning something new. Josie worked hard and eventually reached a good level of skill, even performing on stage in a top hat and tails, just like the stars she had watched for years.

Josie says that dancing has brought her a lot of joy and has helped her stay healthy and active. She believes that if dancing was taken away from her life, she would lose a great source of pleasure. Watching dance performances and learning to dance herself gave her hours of happiness. Josie did not realize at first that dancing was also a form of exercise, but now she understands how important it is to keep moving and stay fit, especially as you get older. For her recent birthday, Josie received a special message from Wayne Sleep, a former Royal Ballet dancer and one of her dance idols. Wayne Sleep sent her a video, telling her to 'keep going' and praising her for starting to dance at 60 and continuing past 100. Josie remembers meeting Wayne Sleep years ago outside the York Theatre Royal, where she gave him paintings she had made of the famous dancer Vaslav Nijinsky. Wayne Sleep accepted the paintings and thanked Josie with a kiss on the cheek. Josie is an active member of her local Age UK social group and enjoys sharing her story with others.
