New Zealand's Bold Move: Banning Social Media for Under-16s!

New Zealand is planning to introduce a new law that would ban children under the age of 16 from using social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, and Facebook. The government says this is because social media can expose young people to harmful content, addictive technology, and pressures that they are not ready to handle. Prime Minister Christopher Luxon explained that social media is affecting children's family life, mental health, sleep, and education. He believes that just as there are rules to protect children in the real world, there should be similar protections in the online world.

The new law, called the Online Safety Bill, would require social media companies to make sure their users are over 16. They could do this by checking the information people use to sign up, using technology to estimate a person's age from their face, or using digital identity checks. If companies do not follow these rules, they could be fined up to 10 percent of their global revenue, which is a lot of money. The bill also says that platforms used by children must regularly check for risks and report on how they are keeping kids safe. However, there will be no fines for children, parents, or caregivers if the rules are broken.

Not everyone agrees with the new law. Some political parties in New Zealand, including the Act and New Zealand First parties, have said they will vote against it. They believe the ban will not work because children might still find ways to use social media. In Australia, a similar ban has been hard to enforce, and many children under 16 still use the apps. In France, a court said a similar law was not allowed because it limited freedom of expression. The New Zealand government has not said which other high-risk platforms might be affected. The bill is still being discussed, and it is not clear if it will become law.
