Why Indians are risking it all to chase the American Dream

The pursuit of the American Dream has led many individuals from India to take significant risks in their quest for a better life. In June 2024, Indian migrants were observed sharing water under the scorching sun after crossing into the United States from Mexico. This scene highlights the challenges and dangers they face during their journey. Recently, the US government has ramped up the deportation of Indian nationals, with a notable charter flight returning many individuals to India in October. This flight was part of a growing trend, as more than 1,000 Indian nationals were repatriated in the last fiscal year alone. This increase in deportations reflects a larger pattern of Indian migrants attempting to enter the US without proper documentation. nnThe US has seen a significant rise in the number of Indian migrants trying to cross its borders. Many of these individuals are young adults, primarily men and women aged 18 to 34, who are seeking better opportunities. They often come from states like Punjab and Haryana, where economic hardships, high unemployment rates, and agricultural distress are prevalent. Interestingly, these migrants are not necessarily from the poorest backgrounds, but they struggle to obtain tourist or student visas due to various factors, including limited English proficiency and educational qualifications. As a result, they often turn to agencies that charge exorbitant fees, sometimes up to $100,000, to facilitate their illegal crossings. To afford these costs, many individuals resort to selling their family farms or taking out loans, which adds to the risks they face. nnThe demographic landscape of Indian migrants at the borders is also changing. In recent years, there has been a noticeable increase in family units attempting to cross into the US. In 2021, single adults made up the majority of those detained at the borders, but now families account for 16 to 18 percent of detentions. This shift has led to tragic incidents, such as the death of an Indian family who froze just a short distance from the Canadian border while trying to enter the US. The motivations for migration are complex, but economic opportunity remains a primary driver. Many migrants are drawn to the prospect of finding work in large cities like New York or Boston, where they can enter informal job markets. Despite the dangers and uncertainties that lie ahead, the dreams of a better life continue to inspire thousands of Indians to embark on this perilous journey.
