Tyneside Cinema Ignites Young Filmmakers' Dreams with New Talent Unit

The Tyneside Cinema in Newcastle has launched a new initiative called the Talent Unit, which is designed to support young filmmakers from the north-east of England. This program offers free access to professional filmmaking facilities, as well as mentoring and training from experienced people in the film and television industry. The main aim is to help young people who might not have the resources or connections to get started in filmmaking. The initiative has received support from well-known figures such as Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle and actor Stephen Tompkinson, who believe that the region has a lot of untapped talent.

At the launch event, Stephen Tompkinson, who grew up in Stockton-on-Tees, spoke about the potential of the north-east. He said that the area already has the right locations and talented people, but what is needed is more support and momentum to help young filmmakers succeed. The Tyneside Cinema, a well-known landmark in Newcastle, is now playing a bigger role in helping the next generation of filmmakers. Other supporters of the Talent Unit include Kema Sikazwe, an actor from Newcastle who appeared in the film 'I, Daniel Blake', and Peter Straughan, an Oscar-winning screenwriter from the region. Sikazwe shared his own experience, saying that getting an opportunity early in his career made a huge difference and allowed him to achieve more than he ever expected.

Nic Greenan, the chief executive of Tyneside Cinema, explained that many young people struggle to continue making films after they leave school because they cannot afford expensive equipment. She said that while schools and colleges provide some support, it becomes much harder once students graduate, especially if their families cannot help them buy cameras and other gear. The Talent Unit is meant to fill this gap by giving young people a place to create and learn. By offering access to equipment and professional advice, the program hopes to help more young people from the north-east tell their stories and build careers in film and television. The Tyneside Cinema believes that this initiative will make a real difference for aspiring filmmakers in the region.
