Hidden Masterpiece Worth £3.5M Found in Almshouse Chapel Surprise!

St John's Almshouse in Sherborne, Dorset, recently discovered that a painting kept in their chapel is worth a staggering £3. 5 million. The artwork, a triptych depicting five miracles of Christ, had been hidden away for centuries by the almshouse brethren to protect it from religious purges. When the almshouse began preparing for renovations, they entrusted the painting to Sotheby's auction house for safekeeping. To their astonishment, experts at Sotheby's identified the piece as the only surviving work of an unknown painter who was active in Brussels during the late 15th century.

The painting's history is remarkable. It was concealed for hundreds of years to shield it from destruction during times of religious upheaval. In the early 19th century, the triptych was rediscovered and placed on display in the almshouse chapel. The ornate building itself, with its cloisters, arched windows, and bell tower, has long been a landmark in Sherborne. The trustees of the almshouse, formally known as The Almshouse of St John the Baptist and St John the Evangelist, were shocked by the painting's value. Mike Burks, one of the almshouse brethren, admitted that their initial estimates were far below the actual worth. This revelation forced them to make important decisions about the future of the artwork and the charity.

Faced with high insurance and security costs, the trustees decided to sell the painting. The proceeds from the auction, scheduled for December 3, will be used to create six new accommodation units for people in need, helping to renew the charity's original mission. In 2023, the almshouse had to close 19 of its accommodation units after a financial review found them unsustainable. Currently, only one unit and an adjacent cottage are available for rent. Richard Hunt, the chairman, emphasized that the charity's mission for nearly 600 years has been to provide housing for local people in need. He believes that selling the artwork offers a vital opportunity to secure the charity's future and continue its work for generations to come.
