Dive into Moomin Magic and Monet Masterpieces at Hull's 2026 Art Bash!

Hull is preparing for an exciting year in 2026, with the Ferens Art Gallery set to host two major exhibitions that will appeal to both children and adults. The first event will celebrate the world of Moomin, the beloved characters created by Finnish illustrator and writer Tove Jansson. Moomins are hippo-like creatures that have appeared in books, TV animations, films, operas, and puppet shows since their debut in 1945. Over 30 million Moomin books have been sold worldwide, and their stories continue to inspire new generations.

From May 23 to September 6, the Ferens Art Gallery will present 'The Wonders of Moominvalley,' an exhibition featuring interactive installations, paintings, and projections. Visitors will be able to explore the magical world of Moominvalley, see colorful artwork, and learn about the history of the Moomins. The display will include creative activities for children and families, making it a fun and educational experience for everyone.

In addition to the Moomin exhibition, the gallery will also showcase a masterpiece by Claude Monet, one of the most famous impressionist painters. Monet's 'The Petit Bras of the Seine at Argenteuil,' painted in 1872, will be on display from June 19 to September 13 as part of the National Gallery Masterpiece Tour. This is a rare opportunity for visitors to see Monet's work up close and learn about his unique style, which uses light and color to create beautiful landscapes.

Hull Museums have planned a diverse program for 2026, including several other highlights. 'Into The Stores' will allow visitors to see artwork that has been hidden away in the gallery's collection, while 'Fixing for the Future' will teach people how the gallery preserves and stores its art. There will also be an 'Open Exhibition' featuring work by amateur and professional artists, with prizes for young artists aged 15 and under.

Another special event will be '20 Historical Women,' held at Wilberforce House Museum and the Streetlife Museum. This exhibition will showcase the work of Doncaster-based artist Chinwe Russell, who has created pieces about modern and historical women who have made a significant impact on the world.
