The school music scheme building confidence and creativity
Children from socially disadvantaged areas in north and west Belfast have been taking part in a special music program called Crescendo, which is now in its tenth year. This program allows primary school children to learn musical instruments and perform in concerts at the famous Ulster Hall. The lessons are given by professional musicians from the Ulster Orchestra, who bring their expertise directly into the schools. This helps children who might not otherwise have the chance to learn music. The program also helps children feel valued and shows that music is not just for professional musicians in big concert halls but for everyone.
One of the students, 11-year-old Kobi from Malvern Primary School, has been learning the trumpet for a year. He described his experience as a rollercoaster, with some difficult moments but also a lot of fun. Sometimes his lip hurt from playing, but he enjoyed the challenge and the chance to play with other children in the brass section of the orchestra. Each year, children in Primary 7 get the opportunity to perform alongside the Ulster Orchestra in a special concert, while younger children in Primary 3 participate by singing in a choir.
Another student, Katie-Rose from Good Shepherd Primary School, has been learning the double bass, a large and challenging instrument. She said playing at the Ulster Hall was an amazing experience and enjoyed hearing all the different instruments playing together. Éimhear, who has been learning the viola for three years, said that although it seemed hard at first, learning to read music made it easier. She was a little nervous about the concert but excited to perform. The program not only teaches music but also helps children build confidence and creativity. It gives them a chance to shine and try something new, which can be very important for their personal growth.
