Why scientists hope seabed mud could reveal Antarctic Ocean secrets

A group of scientists traveled to the Antarctic Peninsula to collect mud from the seabed, hoping to uncover secrets about the Southern Ocean and its history. Working in freezing temperatures and harsh conditions, they used a research ship and a special coring drill to extract long tubes of sediment from depths up to 500 meters. These mud samples are valuable because they contain layers that have built up over centuries, each one holding clues about the ocean's past life and the impact humans have had, especially through activities like industrial whaling. The researchers believe that by studying these layers, they can learn how the ocean and climate have changed over time.

The Antarctic Peninsula is one of the richest areas for marine life in Antarctica. It has been a center for fishing, tourism, and, until the 1980s, large-scale whale hunting. The mud cores collected by the scientists act like a history book, recording what lived in the ocean in the past and how human actions have affected the environment. Once the cores were brought on board, they were frozen and shipped to laboratories in Barcelona and other places around the world. Scientists will analyze the mud to find out what kinds of microbes are present, measure pollution levels, and calculate how much carbon is stored in the sediment. This work is part of a global mission to understand how the ocean and climate are connected.

One important part of the research is studying the DNA found in the mud. The samples are kept at extremely low temperatures to preserve the genetic material, which allows scientists to perform environmental DNA analysis. This technique helps them identify which animals lived in the area, even if they are no longer present. Dr. Carlos Preckler, who leads the DNA part of the study, wants to measure how nearly a century of industrial whaling affected the ocean and atmosphere. Whales store a lot of carbon in their bodies, and when they die, some of that carbon gets buried in the seabed. By measuring whale DNA and carbon in the sediment, scientists can estimate how much whales helped remove carbon from the atmosphere before their numbers were reduced by hunting. This research could show how important whales are in fighting climate change and why protecting them and the ocean is so important.
