Nigerian Muslims arrested for eating in public during Ramadan

In the northern Nigerian state of Kano, the Islamic police, known as Hisbah, have begun arresting Muslims who are seen eating and drinking in public during Ramadan. This month is significant for Muslims as it is a time for fasting from dawn until dusk. The Hisbah police have reported that they arrested 20 individuals for not observing the fast and five for selling food. Mujahid Aminudeen, the deputy commander of Hisbah, stated that these operations will continue throughout the month of Ramadan, which started recently. He emphasized that their focus is not on non-Muslims but rather on ensuring that Muslims respect the rules of fasting during this holy month. Mr. Aminudeen expressed his disappointment, saying, 'It is heart-breaking that in such a holy month meant for fasting, adult Muslims would be seen eating and drinking publicly. ' He made it clear that such behavior would not be tolerated, leading to the arrests. The 25 individuals arrested have been charged in a Sharia court, where they will face appropriate punishment. The Hisbah police often receive tips from the community when they see someone eating in public, and they respond quickly to these reports. In addition to the arrests for eating, the Hisbah police have also detained individuals for having 'inappropriate haircuts' and for wearing shorts that are too short. Last year, those caught not fasting were released after promising to adhere to the fast, and their families were asked to monitor them. However, this year, the situation is different, and those arrested will have to face the court. Sharia law was introduced in Nigeria over two decades ago to work alongside the country's secular laws in 12 northern states with a majority Muslim population. It is important to note that Sharia does not apply to the Christian minorities living in these states. Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, holds great importance in Islam. It is believed that during this month, the first verses of the Quran were revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. Fasting is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, which are the fundamental principles that guide the lives of Muslims. The fast is observed during daylight hours, and Ramadan typically lasts for 29 or 30 days. This year, Ramadan is expected to conclude on March 30.
