Shop Shutter Art Transforms Stanley Street into Vibrant Outdoor Gallery

In Stanley, County Durham, a group of artists and community members have worked together to turn shop shutters into colorful works of art. The project took place on Front Street, where five shop fronts were transformed into a public gallery. The idea was to brighten up the area and show what the town means to the people who live there. Lee Ferry, an artist from Stanley, said it was a special experience to paint on his hometown's high street. He worked with the Silver Friends group, which is run by Karbon Homes, to design the artwork for the Purple Dragon gift shop. Ferry said he was excited to be part of the project and enjoyed working with the group to create something that represents Stanley.

Victoria Keen from Karbon Homes said the project has brought new energy to the street. She believes that art can help improve places and even help the local economy. By involving the community, they created a public gallery that shows local pride and hopes for the future. Other shops that got new artwork include Karbon Homes' Skills Hub, PACT House, and Enter Retro. Each shutter has a different design, like a gold bird with its wings spread or children playing under the word DREAM.

Spanish artist Eduard Sacrest worked with students from St Joseph's Catholic Primary School to come up with ideas for the shutters on the Skills Hub and NEFirst Credit Union. Lewis Hobson and Jordan Stead also created art for other shops. The Forge, an arts organization, helped with the project. Tony Harrington from The Forge said Stanley has had some negative news in the past, but it is a wonderful place with great people. He said the public has responded very positively to the new artwork. Now, Front Street is more colorful and inviting, and people enjoy walking by the new art every day.
