Bath's £54M Fashion Museum Set to Turn Heads by 2030!

Bath, a historic city in England, could soon be home to a new world-class fashion museum. The Bath and North East Somerset Council has proposed turning the old post office building, located at the corner of New Bond Street and Broad Street, into a museum dedicated to fashion. The project is expected to cost £54 million and, if approved, the museum could open its doors in 2030. The museum would house an impressive collection of 100,000 pieces, ranging from 18th-century court dresses to modern cycling gear. These items have been stored in a glove factory in Wiltshire since the museum left its previous home in the Assembly Rooms in 2022.

Councillor Mark Elliott, who is in charge of resources for the council, believes the museum will be a major achievement for Bath. He said, 'To get an entirely new world-class museum including improvements to the surrounding public realm for £54m will be a great achievement. ' Funding for the museum will come from several sources, including the West of England Combined Authority, the National Lottery, and other grants. These sources will cover almost half of the costs, but the council will still need to borrow about £20 million. The council hopes to earn back £17 million through the museum's profits over time.

The museum is expected to be much more than just a place to display clothes. Councillor Elliott described it as a catalyst for civic pride, a driver for social and economic improvement, and a major learning and skills development hub. The museum will also celebrate craftsmanship and help boost the local visitor economy. The plans include galleries upstairs, with a museum shop and cafe on the ground floor. Local business owners are hopeful that the museum will bring more people to this part of Bath, which has sometimes been overlooked. Charlie Dalton-Ball, a jewelry store manager, said the museum would create a cultural and social hub, benefiting local businesses. Nicola Coats, who owns an art supply store, said the museum fits well with the area's history and nearby attractions like the Jane Austen Museum. The city council's planning committee will vote on the proposal next week, and planning officers have recommended that the museum should be approved. If the plan goes ahead, the museum could become a new highlight for Bath and its visitors.
