A rare and miraculous event took place in central Thailand when a 36-year-old Asian elephant named Chamchuri gave birth to a male calf, followed by a female calf. The caretakers at the Ayutthaya Elephant Palace and Royal Kraal were taken by surprise as they were not expecting twins. The second birth caused a panic, and the mother had to be restrained to prevent her from stepping on the female calf. One caretaker was injured in the process. Twins occur in only one percent of elephant births, and male-female twins are even more rare, according to Save the Elephants, a research organization. The veterinarian at the elephant park described the event as a miracle, and said that they've always wanted to see elephant twins but it doesn't happen often. The twins have been featured in live streams on social media, and park visitors are allowed to see them after disinfecting their footwear and hands. They will be named seven days after birth in accordance with Thai custom.
