Stormy Seas Ahead: Will Seahorses Survive Our Wild Weather?

Studland Bay in Dorset, located in the south of England, is a unique marine environment that supports both spiny and short-snouted seahorses. These fascinating creatures rely on seagrass meadows, which are underwater fields of green plants that help protect the sandy seabed and provide shelter for many marine species. Seagrass is not only important for seahorses but also for other fish and sea life that use it for breeding and hiding from predators.

In recent years, efforts to restore seagrass habitats at places like Studland Bay have shown positive results. Since the pandemic, fewer boats have visited the area, allowing the seagrass to recover and encouraging the return of seahorses and other marine animals. Volunteers, who are licensed to survey the seagrass, dive every two weeks during the summer to record the species they find. Neil Garrick-Maidment, founder of The Seahorse Trust, says, 'Without a doubt, every dive we're seeing seahorses. ' He recalls a period of two and a half years when no seahorses were seen, but now the numbers are improving, and other fish like bass are breeding well.

The optimism among volunteers is supported by the creation of the Studland Bay Marine Partnership and the introduction of eco moorings. These moorings prevent boat chains from scraping the seabed and damaging the seagrass. There are currently 87 moorings in the bay, with plans to add more. Survey work is done under strict rules, as it is illegal to disturb or harm seahorses. Volunteers like Kat Lewis find encounters with seahorses magical, describing them as 'unicorns of the sea. ' Seahorses are well camouflaged and blend in with their surroundings, making them difficult to spot. Angus Crawford, a former BBC journalist, joined the volunteers and found three seahorses, including a tiny one and a large female.

Despite the promising signs, there are concerns about the future. Studland's seagrass grows in shallow water, making it vulnerable to winter storms. Climate experts predict that the UK could experience more frequent and intense storms, which could damage the seagrass. Ken Collins, a senior research fellow at the University of Southampton, explains that the bay is usually protected from certain winds, but easterly winds can blow straight into the bay and tear up the seagrass. Unpredictable weather and storminess are worries for the seagrass and the seahorses that depend on it. While seahorses move to deeper waters in winter, healthy seagrass meadows are essential for their breeding cycle. For now, the signs in Studland Bay are encouraging, and volunteers continue to be amazed by every seahorse encounter.
