UK May Ease Up on Electric Car Sales Goals—What’s Next for EVs?
The UK government is planning to change its target for electric car sales. At the moment, the rule says that by 2030, 80 percent of all new cars sold in the UK must be electric vehicles, or EVs. However, car manufacturers and trade unions have been asking the government to lower this target. They are worried that the current goal is too expensive and could lead to job losses in the car industry. Because of these concerns, the government is now considering reducing the target to somewhere between 50 percent and 70 percent. This decision will not be made right away, as the government will hold a consultation to hear different opinions before making a final choice.
The rules about electric cars have changed several times in recent years. Originally, the government wanted to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2030. Later, they introduced the Zero Emission Vehicles mandate, or ZEV mandate, which sets yearly targets for the percentage of new cars that must be electric. For example, the target is 28 percent for 2025 and 33 percent for 2026, with the goal rising each year until it reaches 80 percent in 2030. If car companies do not meet these targets, they could be fined £12,000 for each car that falls short. They can also buy credits from other companies that have sold more electric cars than required.
Environmental groups are worried that lowering the target will slow down the UK's progress towards using more electric cars and fighting climate change. They say that strong targets encourage companies to invest in building more charging points for electric cars. Many drivers are still hesitant to buy electric cars because they are concerned about the range and the number of charging stations available. According to a poll, 74 percent of people in the UK want their local councils to keep or increase support for building more charging points. Last year, over two million new cars were sold in the UK, and about 23 percent of them were electric. This is an improvement from previous years, but it is still below the 2025 target. Most cars sold in the UK are second-hand, and these are not included in the ZEV mandate.
