Kent Hospital Teams Up with AI to Spot Infections Early and Save Lives!

Kent and Canterbury Hospital has become the first NHS hospital in the country to use a new artificial intelligence tool to help spot infections in patients early. The hospital is part of the East Kent Hospitals NHS Trust, and the AI tool they are using is called MEMORI. This tool was created in partnership with a UK health technology company named Sanome. MEMORI works by looking at information that is already collected about patients, such as blood tests, blood pressure, temperature, and other details. It then gives each patient a score that shows how likely they are to develop an infection.

Julie Jones, who manages a ward at the hospital, says that MEMORI is not meant to replace nurses or doctors. Instead, it helps them by saving time. Before, staff had to spend a lot of time searching through patient notes and records to find important information. Now, MEMORI does that work for them, so they can spend more time actually caring for patients. Julie believes this is a win-win situation because it helps patients get better care, helps staff do their jobs more easily, and helps the hospital run more smoothly.

The NHS has a plan to use more digital tools like MEMORI in the future. The goal is to move away from using paper and use more technology to help doctors and nurses. Dr Mike Bedford, who is the chief clinical information officer at the hospital, says that this is just the beginning. He hopes that AI tools will help doctors and nurses spend less time on paperwork and more time with patients. The company Sanome was started by Benedikt von Thüngen after his father became very ill with sepsis, a serious infection. He wanted to make it easier for doctors and nurses to find and treat infections quickly. Now, most of the staff at the hospital use MEMORI every day, and they say it helps them give the right treatment faster. By using AI, the hospital hopes to make things better for both patients and staff, and to help people get well sooner.
