ReviewThe Marvels movie review: Captain Marvel, Ms Marvel join forces in a female-led adventure, the latest wearisome sequel in the Marvel Cinematic Universe
The Marvels, the latest installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, brings together a trio of female superheroes in a cosmic adventure. The film is a direct sequel to the 2019 film Captain Marvel and the Ms. Marvel television show. Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, Iman Vellani, and Samuel L Jackson reprise their roles, joined by newcomers Zawe Ashton and Korean superstar Park Seo-joon. The film is directed by Nia DaCosta.
The Marvels is released at a challenging time for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After revolutionizing the superhero genre and pushing the boundaries of interconnected films and television shows, the franchise is now struggling. Recent films such as Thor: Love and Thunder and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania underperformed at the box office. Jonathan Majors, who plays the MCU’s newly established supervillain, is facing legal issues that may jeopardize his future involvement.
The plot of The Marvels revolves around alien warrior Dar-Benn who retrieves a quantum-powered bracelet that allows her to create wormholes. The corresponding bracelet belongs to Kamala Khan, also known as Ms Marvel. The use of their powers at the same time causes them to switch places. The dynamic between the three female leads is a highlight of the film, but overall, The Marvels is a mix of confusing storytelling and tired superhero clichés. Despite a surprising mid-credits reveal, the franchise seems to be a shadow of its former innovative self.
