The Late Shows is an annual event that has been lighting up Newcastle and Gateshead since 2007. It started as a way to get more young people interested in museums and cultural spaces, but it quickly grew into something much bigger. Bill Griffiths, who is in charge of programs at North East Museums, remembers having to ask people and businesses to join the first year. Back then, only 14 venues took part. Now, nearly 70 different places are involved, and more than 30,000 visitors are expected to join the fun this year. The Late Shows is all about exploring the city after dark and discovering its creative side.

The event is often described as a 'culture crawl' or 'cultural tapas,' where people can wander from place to place, trying out different activities and seeing what each venue has to offer. On Friday night, most of the action is in Ouseburn, a lively part of Newcastle. There will be folk stories, printmaking, and candle pouring workshops. Ouseburn Farm will stay open late with traditional games, while Cobalt Studios is throwing a free party. The Cumberland Arms will take over the Toffee Factory with a disco. There are so many things happening that it's impossible to see everything in one night, which is part of the excitement.

On Saturday, the event spreads out into the city center and Gateshead. Dunston Staithes will be open at sunset, giving people a chance to see the river in the evening light. Newcastle Castle will be transformed into a medieval pub, and the Grainger Market will stay open until 10:30 at night with food, music, and drinks. Creative workshops will be happening all over the city, giving people a chance to try something new. The Late Shows is special because all the venues work together instead of competing. Bill Griffiths says it's about showing off the city's creativity, history, and playful spirit. The event brings together people from all walks of life and helps everyone feel proud of their city.
