He stated, 'I was beyond excited to be given the opportunity to bring this story back to life for a modern audience. ' The War Games is significant as it represents the conclusion of the Second Doctor's journey alongside his companions, Jamie and Zoe. In this adventure, the trio finds themselves in a setting that resembles a World War One battlefield, but as the story unfolds, it becomes clear that not everything is as it appears. Russell T Davies, the showrunner of Doctor Who, shared his vision for the series, saying, 'From the day I arrived back on Doctor Who, this was the plan - to colourise old stories and bring them back to life. ' He believes that the new colorization adds a fresh and vivid look to the classic episodes. Rich Tipple and his team dedicated an entire year to the colorization process. He noted that some viewers find black and white shows less appealing, and by introducing color, they hope to attract a new audience who can appreciate the brilliance of Doctor Who's golden era in the 1960s. The War Games also features the first appearance of the Doctor's race, the Time Lords, which adds to its importance in the series' lore. The filming locations for The War Games included picturesque spots in East Sussex, such as Brighton, Cuckmere, and Birling Gap. Tipple expressed his joy in working on a project that has such strong connections to his hometown, saying, 'It was magic to be able to turn locations that I'm so familiar with into vibrant colour. ' Additionally, the new version of The War Games will showcase the Second Doctor's regeneration into the Third Doctor, portrayed by Jon Pertwee, along with previously unreleased footage that has not been seen since the original broadcast.
