American Teens Swap Morris for Manx at Isle of Man Celtic Bash!

A group of dancers from western Massachusetts in the United States made a special trip to the Isle of Man to take part in the Yn Chruinnaght festival for the first time. This festival, now in its 48th year, is a week-long celebration of Manx culture, including music, dance, and language. It also brings together performers from other Celtic nations such as Scotland, Ireland, Wales, and Cornwall. Celia Bales, one of the American dancers, described the journey as a joy and an adventure. She explained that their fathers had started a Cotswold Morris dancing team in Massachusetts back in the 1980s, and that is how their families became interested in traditional dancing.

Celia said that when she and her friends were teenagers, their way of rebelling was to choose Manx dancing instead of the Morris dancing they grew up with. They loved how Manx dancing looked and how it was different and delicate. Thirteen years ago, some of their group visited the Isle of Man to learn more about the dances, and this year they finally got to participate in the festival. The event is filled with music, with musicians playing harps, violins, accordions, and flutes in busy cafes decorated with the red Manx flag. The festival is a highlight for many people on the island, and it brings together a strong sense of community.

Grainne Joughin, a member of the Yn Chruinnaght organizing committee, said the festival is about bringing together song, music, dance, and communities from different Celtic regions, with a special focus on Manx traditions. She said that even after 48 years, the most important thing is that the festival is still fun. As a dance teacher, she has seen a resurgence of interest in Manx dancing, especially among young people and schools, which she thinks is fantastic.

Many festival-goers describe Yn Chruinnaght as the best week of the year. Meri Wade, who has been attending for years, said she grew up surrounded by musicians and loves the friendly atmosphere and sense of community. She joked that she would not get any sleep during the festival because there is so much to do. Morag Burnard, who is originally from the Isle of Man but now lives in the UK, returned for the festival and stumbled upon a folk music session while having lunch. She said the atmosphere was wonderful and praised the island's strong sense of community. Layla Caley, another attendee, said she always has a good time at the festival because the people are nice and the music is amazing. Mairead Kirwin, who has lived on the Isle of Man since 1969, brought her penny whistle to join in the music and described the festival as a fabulous thing. She hopes to attend all week and enjoys being part of the musical community.

The Yn Chruinnaght festival is a time when people from different backgrounds come together to celebrate Manx culture and Celtic traditions.
