Shiny Viking Treasure: Gold Jar from Galloway Hoard Shines in Public Debut!

The Galloway Hoard is considered one of the most important Viking treasure collections ever discovered in Scotland. Among its many fascinating items is a small gold and crystal jar, which is now being shown to the public for the first time. This jar, measuring just 5 centimeters high, was found in Galloway in 2014 by a metal detectorist. Its display marks a significant moment for historians and museum visitors alike.

The jar is decorated with intricate gold filigree, a type of detailed metalwork that makes it look elegant and unique. Experts believe it resembles a perfume bottle, but its true purpose was likely religious. On the base of the jar, there is a Latin inscription that translates to 'Bishop Hyguald had me made. ' This suggests the jar was created for a church or religious community, possibly in the early medieval kingdom of Northumbria. When the jar was discovered, it was carefully wrapped in linen and placed inside a silk-lined purse, showing how valuable it was to its original owners.

To protect the jar, experts used advanced 3D x-ray imaging to examine it while it was still wrapped, avoiding any damage to the delicate artifact. After months of careful work, the jar was finally separated from its wrappings, allowing it to be displayed for the first time. Dr Martin Goldberg from National Museums Scotland described the rock crystal jar as one of the highlight objects from the Galloway Hoard. He noted that the jar attracted international attention when the inscription was first revealed, and he is excited that it can now be seen in Kirkcudbright.

Although there are gaps in church records from the 9th century, making it difficult to identify Bishop Hyguald precisely, experts believe he was most likely a Northumbrian bishop. The inscription provides strong evidence that the hoard originated from a church or religious community in Northumbria, a region that included Dumfries and Galloway and stretched from Edinburgh to Sheffield. The Galloway Hoard was acquired by National Museums Scotland in 2017 and includes a variety of metal artifacts such as vases, brooches, and jewelry made from silver and gold. The research into the hoard was supported by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, which provided £1 million for a three-year project. The jar and other treasures from the hoard will be on display at Kirkcudbright Galleries until June 2026, offering visitors a unique opportunity to explore Scotland's Viking past.
