Cornwall Surgeons Team Up with Robot for Precision Surgery Breakthrough
Surgeons in Cornwall have reached an important milestone by using a robotic surgical system for the first time. This new technology was introduced at the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust, where it was used in an operation on July 6. The robot is designed to help doctors perform surgeries in small and difficult-to-reach areas of the body. James Clark, who leads the soft tissue robotic surgical program, said that having this technology locally is a huge benefit for patients. Before, people had to travel to other cities like Plymouth or Bristol to get this kind of advanced surgery, but now they can receive it closer to home.
The robotic system works by allowing the surgeon to sit at a console and control the robot's arms using special controls. The surgeon can see the operation on a screen and move the robot's arms with great accuracy. The robot's arms are covered in a clear wrapping and are very thin, which helps them reach places that are hard for human hands to get to. James Clark explained that the robot gives him much more control and precision than he would have if he was operating by hand. He said it was a strange experience at first, but after training at a robotic center in Belgium, the team learned how to use the system well.
One of the main advantages of the robot is that it makes surgery safer and can reduce blood loss. It also means that some patients can recover faster and go home sooner. There are even some operations that the doctors could not do before, but now they can because of the robot. The hospital plans to use the robot for many different conditions, including cancers of the digestive and urinary systems, endometriosis, and some metabolic diseases. The equipment was paid for with two million pounds from the NHS and with help from local fundraisers, including Rotary Clubs and the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Charity. This new technology is expected to improve patient care in Cornwall and help many people in the future.
