Mumbai's Legendary Lunchbox Heroes Face a Shrinking Delivery Race

In Mumbai, India, there is a group of workers known as dabbawalas who have been delivering home-cooked lunches to office workers for over a hundred years. Every morning, these men, dressed in white caps and shirts, ride their bicycles to the train stations with stacks of lunchboxes, called dabbas. They use Mumbai's busy train system to travel across the city, delivering hot meals to people at their workplaces. After lunch, they collect the empty boxes and return them to the homes where they came from. The main reason for this drop is the COVID-19 pandemic. When the pandemic started, offices closed and many people began working from home. This meant that there were far fewer lunches to deliver, and many dabbawalas lost their customers. Some had to leave the job and find other work, like driving auto rickshaws or doing small business jobs. Even after offices reopened, many people continued to work from home or only went to the office a few days a week. This has kept the demand for lunchbox deliveries much lower than before.

Another big change is the way people in Mumbai get their food. There are now many food delivery apps, such as Swiggy and Zomato, and more restaurants and cloud kitchens offering cheap meals. These new options make it easy for people to order food with just a few taps on their phones. The dabbawalas, who used to have little competition, now have to compete with these modern services. Many dabbawalas are struggling to earn enough money and have started working two jobs to support their families. Some work as dabbawalas in the morning and do other jobs in the afternoon or evening. The leaders of the dabbawalas are thinking about new ways to help, like allowing shift work so that dabbawalas can have other jobs too. Older dabbawalas worry that young people will not want to join this profession because it does not pay well and the cost of living is high. Even though the future is uncertain, the dabbawalas continue their work every morning, keeping a unique and important tradition alive in Mumbai. But with so many changes, it is unclear how long this tradition will survive.
