Bournemouth Orchestra Spreads Holiday Cheer with Festive Shopping Center Tunes

The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra decided to bring their music to a new audience this Christmas by performing at the Boscombe Sovereign shopping centre in Dorset. Instead of the usual grand concert hall, the orchestra set up near a large Christmas tree, surrounded by busy shoppers. The musicians, mostly dressed in black suits with one wearing a festive Christmas jumper, played a selection of well-known Christmas songs using brass instruments. Their goal was to share the joy of music with people who might not usually attend a traditional orchestra concert.

Dougie Scarfe, the chief executive of the orchestra, explained that the BSO has always aimed to bring music into people's lives. He mentioned that in the past, the orchestra played in public places like gardens and piers, and now they are finding new ways to connect with the community. The shopping centre provided a unique setting, with its high ceilings creating a special sound for the brass instruments. Stuart Beard, the principal tuba player, said that playing in the shopping centre was a great experience because the sound filled the space in a way that felt magical.

The musicians performed popular Christmas pieces such as 'Sleigh Ride,' 'Fairytale of New York,' and 'The Christmas Song. ' Trombonist Robb Tooley talked about how Christmas music is important to many people, as it brings back memories of past celebrations. The orchestra's community outreach program aims to make music more accessible and enjoyable for everyone. By performing in public spaces, the BSO hopes to surprise and delight people, making their shopping trips more memorable. The musicians believe that music can connect people and create happy moments, especially during the holiday season.
