East of England Sizzles with Record-Breaking 30C+ Heatwave Fun!

The East of England has been experiencing a heatwave, with temperatures soaring above 30 degrees Celsius. This unusual weather comes after the UK saw record-breaking heat over the bank holiday weekend. In places like Ramsey St Mary's in Cambridgeshire, the sky was a deep blue and the sun was shining brightly. People were seen enjoying ice lollies and trying to find ways to stay cool. According to the Met Office, Bedford Aerodrome was one of the hottest spots, reaching 32 degrees Celsius on Monday.

The hot weather led to a very busy weekend for rescue teams, especially the RNLI lifeboat crews in Southend. Nigel Gilchrist from the RNLI said his team was called out 15 times between Saturday and Monday, which was exhausting work. They helped people who were caught out by the tides or swimmers who found themselves out of their depth. Gilchrist explained that if you get into trouble in the water, the best thing to do is float on your back, tilt your head back until your ears are in the water, and try not to panic. This technique, known as 'float to live,' saved more than 50 people over the weekend.

The high temperatures were felt across the region. In Marham, south of King's Lynn in Norfolk, it also reached 32 degrees Celsius. The University of Cambridge Botanic Garden reported a temperature of 33. 2 degrees Celsius. Many people headed to the coast in Southwold, Suffolk, to cool off in the sea. The beach was busy with people wading in the water and relaxing on the sand. In Northampton, the weather was also sunny and warm, with clear blue skies. The UK broke its all-time May temperature record, with 34. 8 degrees Celsius recorded at Kew Gardens in London. Normally, May temperatures are between 14 and 20 degrees Celsius. Climate scientists say that these extreme heat events are becoming more common and intense because of climate change.

As the day ended, a stunning sunset was seen in Somerton, Norfolk, with the sky turning shades of orange and pink. People are being advised to stay safe in the heat by drinking plenty of water, staying in the shade, and being careful if they go swimming. The weather is expected to cool down slightly in the coming days, but the recent heatwave has been a big topic of conversation in the East of England.
