Swatch Launch Frenzy: CEO Cheers Crowds Amid Global Watch Chaos
Swatch, a well-known Swiss watch company, recently launched a new pocket watch in partnership with luxury watchmaker Audemars Piguet. This new watch, called the Royal Pop, attracted huge crowds to Swatch stores in cities around the world. The excitement was so intense that some stores experienced chaos, with long lines and even some scuffles as people tried to get their hands on the new product. Swatch's CEO, Nick Hayek Jr, spoke to the BBC about the situation. He said that having big crowds at the start of a product launch is actually a good thing because it shows that people are interested and excited. He also explained that Swatch had made it clear that the watch would be available for months, not just one day, so there was no need to rush.
Despite this, some Swatch stores in the UK had to close for safety reasons. The new pocket watch costs about £335 and is only available in stores, not online. It combines Swatch's colorful, pop-art style from the 1980s with Audemars Piguet's famous octagonal bezel. Normally, Audemars Piguet watches are very expensive, but this collaboration makes the design more affordable. Swatch said that most shopping centers and local authorities worked with them to manage the crowds, and in places where they cooperated, things went smoothly. However, in some locations, the situation became tense and difficult to control.
In Manchester, police had to be called to a Swatch store to help manage the large number of people. In Cardiff, a man was arrested during the launch event. Swatch also closed stores in Liverpool, Birmingham, Sheffield, Glasgow, and London because of safety concerns. Videos on social media showed long lines and some pushing and shoving in other countries as well. Swatch said that only 20 out of its 220 stores worldwide were affected by these problems. After the first day, things calmed down. Some people bought the watch and then sold it for much higher prices, which is common in the luxury market. A retail expert explained that social media played a big role in creating excitement, especially among younger buyers. Many people thought the watch was a limited edition, but it will actually be available for a long time.
