Pavarotti Statue's Chilly Ice Rink Stunt Hits a Sour Note in Italy

In the Italian town of Pesaro, a recent decision to place a statue of the legendary opera singer Luciano Pavarotti inside a Christmas ice rink has sparked controversy and upset his family. The life-size bronze statue, which was unveiled in April 2024 to honor Pavarotti's legacy, now stands knee-deep in ice, surrounded by clear perspex walls in the center of the town's piazza. This unusual display was part of a temporary holiday attraction, but it has not been well received by everyone. Pavarotti's widow, Nicoletta Mantovani, expressed her anger and disappointment, saying she felt the town was ridiculing her late husband. She told local media that she did not expect such treatment of someone who had brought so much pride to Italy.

Mayor Andrea Biancani responded to the criticism by apologizing to Pavarotti's family and admitting that the town council had made a mistake. He explained that when the plans for the ice rink were first presented, he was assured that the statue would not be affected. However, changes in the design meant the statue ended up inside the rink. Before the rink opened on November 29, the mayor even posted a digitally altered image of the statue playing ice hockey, using the hashtag 'Give a high-five to Pavarotti. ' While this was meant to be lighthearted, it did not ease the concerns of Pavarotti's family. The mayor said it was now too late to move the statue or dismantle the rink, but he promised that such an incident would not happen again.

Luciano Pavarotti was one of the most celebrated opera singers in history. He was known for his powerful voice and memorable performances, including his role in the Three Tenors concerts and his famous rendition of 'Nessun Dorma' at the 1990 football World Cup in Italy. Pavarotti's final performance was at the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in Turin in 2006. He passed away in 2007 at the age of 71 after battling pancreatic cancer. Pavarotti left behind four daughters from two marriages, and his second wife, Nicoletta Mantovani, has since remarried. The family hopes that the public will continue to honor Pavarotti's musical achievements and remember him for his contributions to Italian culture, rather than the recent controversy surrounding his statue.
