From Digital Disaster to Tangible Treasures: Printing Memories for My Daughter
Stephen Buffardi, a resident of Massachusetts, experienced a major loss when his phone crashed while transferring photos to a new device. The progress bar was only halfway when everything stopped, and thousands of cherished photos vanished. These included snapshots from early dates with his wife Weena and many family moments. Now, with a six-year-old daughter named Sophia, Stephen feels the loss even more deeply. He wishes he could show Sophia the pictures from when he and Weena first met. This event made Stephen realize that digital photos are not always safe, so he decided to start printing out physical photo albums for his daughter.
Stephen has become dedicated to documenting Sophia’s life in printed albums. He started with her newborn days, including her hospital tag and tiny footprints, and has continued to make an album for each year of her life. He is currently working on an album for her fifth year and recently ordered 300 photos to be printed. Sophia enjoys flipping through these albums, seeing herself grow up, and learning about her family’s history. While making photo albums is a tradition that goes back over a century, today’s digital world has made it easy to forget the importance of physical copies. Experts recommend keeping three versions of your most important photos: the original on your phone, a copy online, and another on a hard drive. Some even suggest printing them out, just like Stephen does.
There are several ways to back up your photos. Cloud services like Apple’s iCloud and Google Photos automatically save your pictures, but they have storage limits. For example, iCloud offers 5GB for free, and after that, you have to pay a monthly fee. Google Photos gives you 15GB, but that space is shared with your email and other files. Even though these services are reliable, they are not completely risk-free. Accounts can be hacked, passwords can be forgotten, and sometimes companies lose data. Social media is also not a safe place to store your memories. In 2019, MySpace lost millions of songs and photos during a server migration, and the company apologized for the loss.
Experts say it’s wise to keep your photos on an external hard drive or memory card as well. Hard drives can last up to 10 or even 20 years, but it’s important to move your photos to a new device as technology changes. Printed photos, despite risks like fire or water damage, are still a reliable way to preserve memories. People like Thendo Muloiwa from South Africa treasure the photo albums their parents made for them and are now printing their own digital photos. Looking through a photo album with friends or family is a special experience that can’t be replaced by scrolling through a phone. It’s about valuing what’s important before it’s too late. Printing photos helps ensure that your memories will be around for future generations to enjoy.
