Horizon: An American Saga review: Kevin Costner's Western is a numbingly long, incoherent disaster

Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1, directed by Kevin Costner, is a new Western film that has premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. The film is the first part of a planned four-part project. It features a cast of good-looking actors and stunning scenery, including snowy mountains and desert rock formations. There are also shoot-outs and horseback chases, typical of Western movies. However, the film lacks a clear plot, well-developed characters, and a structured storyline. This may be because the movie is only the first part of a larger project, with more chapters to come. The various storylines in the movie barely get started before the movie ends, leaving the audience feeling unsatisfied. The movie is set in Arizona's San Pedro Valley in 1859 and follows the lives of settlers and Apache warriors. Another storyline involves a gang of bounty hunters searching for the Apaches, while the Apaches themselves debate whether to continue their attacks. There is also a separate storyline about a wagon train in western Kansas, and Kevin Costner's character, a noble gunslinger, who protects a woman and a boy from vengeful villains. The movie's most obvious problem is that the different storylines are not tied together, and each section is dull and slow, with long dialogue scenes that do not establish the characters well.
