Next-Gen Train Wi-Fi Set to Supercharge Business Travel in the UK!

The UK government has announced a major investment to improve wi-fi on trains, aiming to make journeys more productive for business travelers and commuters. Out of a total £57 million being spent across the country, £12 million will be dedicated to improving wi-fi on trains in the west and south west of England and Wales. This upgrade is expected to make a big difference for people who rely on trains for work, especially in areas where internet connections have been unreliable.

In November 2025, Great Western Railway began using a new type of wi-fi technology on its trains in the South West. This technology was originally developed for Formula 1 cars, which means it is designed to be fast and reliable even when moving at high speeds. Andy Bowes-Roden, the deputy editor of Modern Railways magazine, explained that businesses in Cornwall and other rural areas often lose valuable time because the current train wi-fi is patchy and depends on mobile phone signals. In many parts of Cornwall, there is little or no signal, making it hard for people to work while traveling. Bowes-Roden believes that having high-speed, reliable wi-fi on trains would be a 'game changer' for businesses, allowing people to do all the tasks they would normally do in an office.

The government plans to start installing the new wi-fi infrastructure in 2026, with the goal of having it fully available by 2028. This project, called Project Reach, brings together public and private investment and is expected to save taxpayers around £300 million. It will also create a strong digital network that supports the UK's goals for digital growth. Bowes-Roden said that the government should focus on how this investment helps businesses, as it supports regional growth and reduces inequality. The Department for Transport is working with train companies to test the new wi-fi and find ways to make it even better. They are also looking at using advanced satellite technology to make sure passengers have fast, reliable internet on mainline trains. The goal is to make train travel more comfortable and convenient, helping people stay connected and productive during their journeys.
