Toyah Willcox Rocks an Honorary Doctorate After 40+ Years of Hits!

Singer-songwriter Toyah Willcox has been awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Worcester, recognizing her long and successful career in music and the arts. Over more than forty years, Toyah has recorded 25 albums and achieved 13 Top 40 singles. She has also appeared in more than 20 feature films and over 40 stage productions, making her a well-known figure in the entertainment world. In addition to her artistic work, Toyah has been a patron of the Avon Navigation Trust since 2024, supporting environmental education and youth programs.

At the ceremony held at Worcester Cathedral, Toyah wore a blue ceremonial gown and a black Tudor bonnet. She expressed her pride and happiness at receiving the honorary doctorate, saying it was a great honor to be recognized by a university in her local area. Toyah, who was born in Birmingham and now lives in Pershore, said she was pleasantly surprised when she received the letter about the award. She felt it was wonderful to be seen and heard for her contributions.

When speaking to the graduating students, Toyah admitted she was nervous because of the age difference between her and the students. She is 68, while most of the students are around 20. She wanted to share advice that would help them as they start their own careers. Toyah talked about the importance of communication, kindness, friendship, and always being willing to learn. She shared stories from her own life that she hoped would inspire the students. One of her main messages was about the value of networking and making connections in your chosen field. She encouraged students to be friendly and supportive, to work well in teams, and to show others that they can be trusted. Toyah believes these qualities can lead to many opportunities. Other people who received honorary doctorates at the ceremony included journalist Helen Lewis, historian Professor Dame Linda Colley, and sports stars Dawn Scott and Lark Atkin-Davies. Around 2,500 students are graduating from the University of Worcester this year, celebrating achievements in subjects like health, education, business, science, humanities, sport, and the arts.
