Joan Armatrading’s Musical Love Letter to Birmingham Shines Bright

Joan Armatrading, a celebrated singer-songwriter, has created a classical music piece as a tribute to her beloved home city, Birmingham. The composition, titled 'Homeland,' is described by Armatrading as a 'love letter' to the city that has played a significant role in her life. She moved to Birmingham from St Kitts in the Caribbean when she was just seven years old, and the city has remained close to her heart ever since. Armatrading taught herself to play both the piano and guitar as a child, and by the age of fourteen, she was already writing her own songs. Her career took off in the 1970s and 1980s, with hits such as 'Love and Affection' and 'Me Myself I,' earning her recognition for her unique blend of jazz, reggae, folk, and rock music.

'Homeland' will be performed for the first time at the Bringing The Light concert, which is scheduled to take place at Birmingham's Symphony Hall on December 7. The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra Chorus will present the fifteen-minute score, conducted by Michael Seal. Armatrading says the piece is meant to highlight the spirit of Birmingham and its people, focusing on their sense of community, resilience, and warmth. She explains that the music weaves together the sounds, energy, and rhythms of the city, while also reaching out to the surrounding countryside. For Armatrading, Birmingham is not just a backdrop but a living, breathing presence, where industry and nature exist side by side in quiet beauty.

Throughout her career, Joan Armatrading has received numerous accolades. She was the first female UK artist to be nominated for a Grammy in the blues category and won an Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Contemporary Song Collection in 1996. In 2020, she was honored with the Ivor Novello Fellowship, the highest award given by the Ivors Academy, recognizing her significant contributions to music. Her first classical composition, Symphony No 1, premiered at London's Southbank Centre in 2023. Armatrading says she will always hold Birmingham with affection and pride, and she hopes 'Homeland' will help others appreciate the city's unique character and beauty.
