Rats' paintings sold to people around the world

In a charming story from Somerset, a veterinary nurse named Steph Toogood has turned her pet rats into artists, creating a unique business that has captured the hearts of people around the world. These adorable rodents use their tiny feet to walk through paint, leaving colorful paw prints on miniature canvases. The paintings, which can sell for as much as £35 each, have not only provided a source of income for Steph but have also helped change the way many people view rats. 'A lot of people have come to me and said that what I do with the photos I share has changed their perception of rats, which is lovely to hear,' said the 26-year-old. Steph's journey with rats began in 2016, following the death of her father. She found comfort in the company of these small creatures. However, it was the loss of one of her beloved rats, Captain Jack Sparrow, that inspired her to create rat art. 'After I lost Captain Jack, I took his paw prints and wanted to create something special for my other boys to treasure,' she explained. This led her to discover mini canvases, and soon her rats were creating their own little masterpieces. Since that time, Steph has produced hundreds of paintings and other rat-themed products, which she sells online. Customers have the option to choose which of her rat artists will create their painting. 'When I first started my business, I had 12 boy rats involved in painting,' she shared. 'Now, I have five male rats and 11 female rats, with 12 of them actively painting. ' Some of the rats do not participate in painting due to health reasons or simply because they do not enjoy it. The painting process is quite gentle and safe. Steph uses non-toxic, water-based paint and places the rats in a bath, guiding them through the paint onto the small canvases. 'The rats are trained to follow my hand and treats,' she said. 'They are never forced to run through paint. If they show any signs of unwillingness, we stop. ' The canvases they use measure 7cm by 9cm, making them the perfect size for these little artists. In addition to selling their artwork, Steph has created an Instagram account dedicated to her rats, showcasing their daily activities and adventures. 'I think that photographs help to capture how cute rats really are and show a different side to them,' she said. 'Domesticated rats are very different from their wild counterparts. ' Through her work, Steph hopes to change the perception of rats and show that they can be loving and friendly pets.
