Small Music Festivals Rock On: Intimate Vibes Beat Big Crowds Every Time!

Music festivals are a big part of summer for many people, but lately, a lot of these events have been struggling to survive. Over the past few years, dozens of festivals have closed down, and many others are just barely hanging on. For example, Red Rooster, a festival that had been running for more than a decade near the Norfolk and Suffolk border, was canceled this year. Kernowfornia Festival in Cornwall was also canceled after just one year, with the organizers blaming recent financial problems. Kernowfornia had replaced another festival called Making Waves, which also ended because of debts.

Despite all this bad news, there are still some independent festivals that are doing well. One example is the Nene Valley Rock Festival in Lincolnshire. This festival limits ticket sales to just 1,000 per day, which is much smaller than big festivals like Glastonbury. Tony Castle, the director, says they want to create a more personal and comfortable experience for their guests. They are a non-profit festival, so all the money they make goes back into improving the event. They have clean bathrooms, free showers, and even glamping tents with real beds, which have all been popular with festival-goers. Because of these efforts, they have built a loyal group of fans who buy tickets even before the bands are announced. Castle believes that if the government reduced taxes for small festivals, it would help them survive.

Another festival that has found success is Maid of Stone in Kent. This festival is about to be held for the fourth time and can host up to 5,000 people. It takes place on the same site as the old Ramblin' Man Fair, which closed after the lockdown. Chris Wright, one of the organizers, says that more than 100 festivals in the UK have closed since 2024, and he expects things to get even harder because of the economy and rising fuel costs. He says that running an independent festival is tough because a few big companies control most of the industry. His team has spent ten years building up their own equipment and infrastructure, which helps them save money.

John Rostron, who leads the Association of Independent Festivals, says that while about 30 festivals have been canceled or postponed this year, about the same number of new ones have started. He says that some festivals are selling more tickets than ever, partly because people can pay for tickets in installments. However, even sold-out festivals are struggling with cash flow because costs are so high. Bands and their managers are charging more money and asking to be paid earlier, which puts extra pressure on small festivals. Rostron thinks the government should help by offering tax relief to grassroots music festivals.

Rock N Roll Circus is another festival that is trying something different by mixing music with circus acts. Karen Johnson, who works for the festival, says that big companies are taking over the industry, and big arena shows are making it harder for smaller festivals to compete. She believes that offering good value for money and giving people choices, like day festivals in parks, can help independent festivals survive. Even though it is a tough business, many people are working hard to keep their festivals going because they love music and want to share it with others.
