Glasgow Bin Lorry Blaze Sparks Urgent Battery Recycling Alert

A bin lorry caught fire on Jamaica Street in the centre of Glasgow after a battery was thrown away in the wrong bin. The incident happened on Wednesday morning, causing the waste collection crew to unload all the rubbish onto the busy street. Firefighters arrived quickly to inspect the rubbish and make sure the fire was out. This is the eighth time this year that a fire has started in a bin lorry in Glasgow because of batteries or electrical items being put in the wrong bins.

Chris Mitchell, a representative from the GMB trade union, said the fire should be seen as a warning. He explained that everyone has a responsibility to put the right things in the right bins. The fire started after the bins at a student accommodation building were emptied into the lorry, but it is not clear exactly where the battery came from. Mitchell urged people to be careful about what they throw away, especially electrical items like batteries. He reminded residents that there are special recycling centres and collection services in Glasgow where batteries and electrical goods can be disposed of safely.

Glasgow City Council also spoke about the dangers of putting batteries in general waste. A spokesperson said it is vital for everyone to recycle batteries properly. Batteries can be recycled at many shops or at the council’s household waste recycling centres. The council praised the lorry crew for following the correct procedure by unloading the rubbish as soon as they noticed the fire. Their quick response meant that no one was hurt and the lorry was not badly damaged. The council hopes that by sharing this story, more people will remember to recycle batteries safely and help prevent future fires.
