Portmeirion: Wales’ Colorful Riviera Village Celebrates 100 Years of Charm

Portmeirion is a unique and colorful village located on the coast of north Wales. This year, the village is celebrating its 100th anniversary. Portmeirion was designed and built by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis, who worked on it from 1925 until 1975. He wanted to create a place that looked like the Italian Riviera, but he also wanted to show that you could build new things in a beautiful place without harming the natural environment. Portmeirion is not just a copy of an Italian village. It is a mix of different architectural styles, with buildings that were saved from other places and brought here. Portmeirion is very popular with tourists. Every year, about 250,000 people visit the village. Keeping the village in good shape is expensive, so the money from visitors is very important. Ian Roberts, the finance director, says that they need to make enough money to take care of all the buildings. Portmeirion employs around 200 people, and in the summer, the number goes up to 270. The village has two hotels and 13 holiday homes, which are important for the business. The staff work hard to keep everything clean and to improve the village for visitors.

Portmeirion is also a popular place for weddings. Many people who get married there have been visiting the village since they were children. Some couples even travel from other countries to have their wedding in Portmeirion. The village used to host a music festival called Festival No 6, but it has not been held since 2018. This year, there will be concerts to celebrate the village's 100th birthday, with performances by famous musicians like Bryn Terfel and Jools Holland. Over the years, Portmeirion has welcomed famous visitors such as Richard Gere and Sean Connery. Most of the staff live nearby and speak Welsh, and they are proud of their community. Portmeirion is a special place that combines beautiful architecture, history, and a strong local culture, making it a favorite destination for many people.
