From Empty Rooms to Emmy Glory: Richard Gadd's Edinburgh Fringe Journey

Richard Gadd is a Scottish comedian and actor whose career took off thanks to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. He credits the festival for giving him the chance to turn his ideas into a successful career. His show Baby Reindeer, which is a dark comedy based on his real-life experience with a stalker, became a huge hit at the Fringe. It sold out before the festival even started and won several awards. After its success in Edinburgh, the show moved to London and continued to attract attention.

In the last week of the 2019 festival, TV executives came to see Baby Reindeer. This was a turning point for Richard. He received messages from his manager saying that Netflix, BBC, HBO, and Channel 4 were all interested in working with him. He eventually chose to make Baby Reindeer into a TV show for Netflix. The show became a global sensation, topping streaming charts and winning many awards, including six Emmys. After that, Richard created another show called Half Man for the BBC, which aired earlier this year.

Richard grew up in Wormit, Fife, and first became interested in the Fringe after seeing the National Theatre of Scotland’s Black Watch in 2006. The play was about soldiers and the Iraq war, and it made a big impression on him. Four years later, he performed his first show at the Fringe. He was only 20 years old and just starting out in comedy. Sometimes, only a few people came to his shows, and sometimes nobody came at all. He even had to cancel shows because there was no audience. But Richard kept performing, learning from each experience, and slowly building his career.

The Fringe is known for using all kinds of spaces as stages, and Richard performed in some unusual places. One venue didn’t even have a door, so people would walk through his show looking for the bathroom. He also did some wild things on stage, like dancing in a thong covered in baby oil or biting into a bar of soap, which ended with him in the hospital. Despite these challenges, Richard kept improving and eventually got his first four-star review.

In 2016, Richard performed Monkey See Monkey Do, a show where he ran on a treadmill while a gorilla chased him on a screen. The show was about his experience with trauma, and performing it helped him heal. The show sold out, received great reviews, and won the Edinburgh Comedy Award. Richard said that sharing his story on stage made him feel free and helped him regain his confidence.

The Fringe has launched many other famous shows and performers, such as Fleabag, Taskmaster, Alan Partridge, and The Mighty Boosh. Richard hopes the festival will continue to give new voices a chance, but he is worried about rising costs, especially for accommodation. He believes the festival should be open to everyone, not just those who can afford it. Richard says the magic of the Fringe is that anyone can arrive with just an idea and leave with a career, and he hopes that spirit will continue for years to come.
