Peterborough Cathedral to Shine Bright with Giant Glowing Sun Art
A giant glowing Sun artwork called Helios is coming to Peterborough Cathedral. This impressive installation was created by artist Luke Jerram and is named after the Greek god of the Sun. The artwork is a huge sphere, measuring seven meters in diameter, and will be suspended from the cathedral's ceiling. It is lit from the inside with a bright yellow light, making it look like a real Sun shining indoors. Visitors to the cathedral will get a close look at the Sun's surface, which is shown in amazing detail thanks to high-resolution images and data from NASA and astrophotographer Dr Stuart Green. Each centimeter on the model represents 1,242 miles of the real Sun, so people can see features like sunspots, filaments, and areas connected to solar flares.
The cathedral's events manager, Gary Cowling, said the team is thrilled to host Helios, especially after the success of previous installations by Luke Jerram. In the past, the cathedral has displayed Jerram's Museum of the Moon, Gaia, and Mars, all of which attracted many visitors and were very popular. The staff hopes that Helios will have a similar effect, bringing more people to the cathedral and encouraging them to learn about space and art. The installation is supported by a small grant from Peterborough Positive, which helps fund creative projects in the city.
Helios is not just a visual experience. It also features a surround-sound composition created by artists Duncan Speakman and Sarah Anderson. This special music was made to go along with the Sun installation, making the experience even more immersive for visitors. The cathedral has hosted other exciting events in the past, such as a sea monster exhibition and a helter skelter, and hopes that Helios will continue to inspire and educate people of all ages.
