Discovering Elizabeth Gaskell: A Hidden Literary Gem Ignites New Inspiration

Elizabeth Gaskell was a famous writer from the Victorian era who lived in Manchester, England. Even though she wrote important books about family, society, and politics, not many people today know about her. Princess Arinola Adegbite, a young writer from Manchester, started working at Gaskell's old house as a writer-in-residence. She was surprised and a bit annoyed that she had never heard of Elizabeth Gaskell before, especially since she studied English literature. Princess said she would have loved to learn about Gaskell in school because her stories are still meaningful and interesting.

Princess was chosen for the job along with two other young women, Guruleen Kahlo and Georgia Affonso. None of them had read Gaskell's books before, but that was exactly why they were picked. The museum wanted people who could bring a fresh view to Gaskell's work. The three writers wrote poems and stories inspired by Gaskell and her home. Their writings were shown in an exhibition at the house and later put together in a book called 'I've never read Elizabeth Gaskell. ' Princess said she especially liked spending time in Gaskell's room, where she felt inspired to write. She wrote about the garden, the changing seasons, and how people experience feelings like grief, just like trees lose their leaves.

Elizabeth Gaskell's house is now a museum that opens three days a week. It has a beautiful garden and attracts over 5,000 visitors each year, but that's not as many as the homes of other famous writers like Jane Austen or Charles Dickens. The museum director, Sally Jastrzebski-Lloyd, says that not many people know about Gaskell because her books are not taught in schools anymore. She wants to make the museum more interesting for young people by showing poems, plays, and stories, not just facts and history. Gaskell wrote eight novels and was friends with other famous writers like Charlotte Bronte. She wrote about topics that are still important today, such as family problems and changes in society. The museum hopes that more people will come to learn about her and be inspired by her work, just like Princess and the other writers were.
