Social Media Giants Slammed in Landmark Win for Kids' Mental Health!

A landmark trial in Los Angeles has ended with a major victory for campaigners who want stricter rules on social media. A young woman named Kaley sued Meta, the company behind Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, and Google, which owns YouTube. She said she became addicted to social media as a child, and it seriously affected her mental health. The jury agreed with her, saying that Meta and YouTube made their platforms in ways that were addictive and harmful to young people. Kaley was awarded six million dollars in damages, and this decision could influence hundreds of similar cases in the United States.

Meta and Google both said they disagreed with the verdict and plan to appeal. Meta argued that teen mental health is very complicated and cannot be blamed on just one app. They also said they are committed to protecting teens online. Google said YouTube is a streaming platform, not a social media site, and that the case misunderstood what YouTube is. However, many parents and campaigners believe this case is a turning point. The jury found that Meta and Google acted with 'malice, oppression, or fraud' and decided that Kaley should receive three million dollars in compensatory damages and another three million in punitive damages. Meta will pay seventy percent of the damages, and Google will pay the rest. Outside the courthouse, parents who have lost children due to social media harms celebrated the verdict. This case comes at a time when countries like Australia and the UK are considering new laws to limit or ban social media for children. The UK government is currently asking the public if social media should be banned for people under sixteen. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said things must change to protect children.

Kaley's lawyers argued that Meta and Google failed to stop children from using their platforms, even though they knew it was happening. Kaley said she started using Instagram and YouTube when she was just six years old and was never blocked because of her age. She testified that she stopped spending time with her family and became obsessed with her appearance because of social media filters. She was later diagnosed with anxiety, depression, and body dysmorphia. Her lawyers said features like infinite scroll were designed to keep users hooked. They also said Meta wanted young users because they would stay on the platform longer.
