Chilly Yorkshire Beach Scene Captured in Stunning New Art Gallery Gem
A painting called 'Two Girls On The Shore' by the well-known British artist David Remfry has been acquired by Beverley Art Gallery in Yorkshire. The artwork, created in 1963, features two young women walking along the beach at Spurn Point. They are dressed in swimming costumes and towels, carrying bundles of clothes, and the beach, waves, and sea are painted in muted tones of browns and reds, forming stripes of color. The painting captures a cold, 'nithering' day, which is a northern English or Scottish word meaning freezing or shivering with cold.
David Remfry grew up in Hull and studied art there in the early 1960s. His work has been exhibited widely in both the UK and the US, and he is known for his large-scale watercolors of dancers and his drawings of friends and neighbors at the Hotel Chelsea in New York, where he lived from 1995 to 2016. Remfry was appointed an MBE in 2001 for his contributions to art. The gallery's curator, Hannah Willetts, said the painting reflects the stark beauty of East Yorkshire's coastline and Remfry's deep connection to the area. She also mentioned that acquiring this painting strengthens the gallery's commitment to contemporary British art.
The painting is considered the gallery's most significant addition by a living artist in recent years. It had been on loan at the gallery since December 2024, and its purchase was made possible with support from the East Riding of Yorkshire Council, the Friends of Beverley Art Gallery, and Art Fund. A spokesperson for the council said the painting's muted palette and bold composition perfectly capture the feeling of a cold day at Spurn Point. Remfry expressed his pleasure at having his work become a permanent part of the gallery's collection, saying it felt deeply meaningful to him.
Beverley Art Gallery also features other artworks and items, such as bright colored portraits of women, magazines, and games from British culture. Spurn Point, where the painting is set, is a unique location with a lighthouse, a single track road, and land between the North Sea and the Humber Estuary. The gallery hopes that the addition of 'Two Girls On The Shore' will encourage more people to visit and learn about the history and art of Yorkshire. The painting and the gallery's collection highlight the region's artistic heritage and the importance of preserving contemporary British art.
