Splash of Colors and Joy: Holi Unites Thousands in Bournemouth Park

Holi, known as the Festival of Colours, brought hundreds of people together at Muscliff Park in Bournemouth, in the south of England. The event was organized by volunteers from the Bournemouth, Poole, and Christchurch Indian Community group. People from all over the area, and even from cities like Southampton, Bridport, Weymouth, and London, came to join the celebration. The festival is famous for its tradition of throwing bright coloured powders, called gulal, at each other. The air was filled with pink, yellow, green, orange, purple, and blue as people danced to Bollywood music and enjoyed the start of spring.

Poonam Paranjpe, one of the event’s co-founders, said that Holi is more than just a fun party. It is a time when people from many different backgrounds come together. She explained that Holi helps build friendships and makes the community stronger. The festival included a Bollywood dance workshop, live music, and a DJ playing energetic songs. People smiled, took photos, and joined in the classic Holi colour countdown, where everyone throws powder at the same time. The powders are dry and biodegradable, so they are safe for the environment and easy to clean up.

Holi also has a deeper meaning. It celebrates the victory of good over evil and the arrival of spring. The night before Holi, people light bonfires to remember a story from Hindu tradition. In the story, a boy named Prahlad is saved from fire because he is good, while the demon Holika is not. The festival is a symbol of joy, renewal, and hope. There was also a variety of food, including Indian street snacks and Nepalese dishes, making the event even more special. Poonam said that Holi is about connection and inclusivity, and it was wonderful to see so many people from different cultures celebrating together. The park was filled with laughter, music, and the spirit of togetherness.
