AI data centres are quickly becoming a major part of the technology world, especially as artificial intelligence grows more popular. These centres are not just regular buildings filled with computers. They are designed to handle the huge amount of computing power needed for AI apps like ChatGPT, DeepSeek, and Claude. According to experts at Morgan Stanley, about three trillion dollars will be spent globally on AI data centres by 2029. Half of this money will go toward building the centres, and the other half will be spent on the expensive hardware inside.

What makes AI data centres different from traditional ones is how they are built and what they do. Regular data centres store things like photos, social media, and work files. AI data centres, however, need to process massive amounts of information very quickly. They use special computer chips, mostly made by Nvidia, which are very costly and are packed tightly together in large cabinets. This close arrangement is important because every tiny bit of distance between chips can slow down the processing. AI needs to work in real time, so these chips are placed as close as possible to reduce delays. This setup is called parallel processing, where many computers work together as one big machine.

The need for speed and power means AI data centres use a lot of electricity. Sometimes, their energy spikes are as big as thousands of homes turning on their kettles at the same time. This puts a lot of pressure on local power grids, and companies have to find ways to manage it. Microsoft, for example, is investing billions in new energy projects, including deals for nuclear power. Google and Amazon are also working on using more renewable energy like solar and wind. Cooling is another big challenge, as these centres need a lot of water to keep the chips from overheating. In some places, like Virginia in the US and Lincolnshire in the UK, there are concerns about how much water these centres will use. Some companies are considering using recycled water instead of drinking water to help solve this problem.

Despite the high costs and challenges, many experts believe AI data centres are a good investment. AI is expected to have a bigger impact than previous technologies, even the internet. Some people worry that there is too much hype and spending, but others say these centres are the foundation of the future tech world. Unlike past tech bubbles, AI data centres are real buildings with real equipment. However, the spending boom may not last forever, and companies need to make sure their investments pay off.
