Northern Ireland's £8M Robot Welding Boost Sparks New Jobs and Innovation
Five manufacturing companies in Northern Ireland are planning to invest nearly eight million pounds in robotic welding technology. This is a big step for these companies, which include Hyster Yale, Terex, Nugent Trailers, Four Dee, and Datum Design. They are working together with the Advanced Manufacturing Innovation Centre, known as AMIC, which is part of the Belfast Region City Deal. AMIC’s goal is to help local businesses use new technology and improve the way they make things.
The investment is being supported by almost five million pounds from Invest NI, a government group that helps businesses grow. The rest of the money is coming from the companies themselves. The main idea is to use robotic welding machines, which are not new, but now they will be used with digital technology to make work even more efficient. Sam Turner, the boss of AMIC, said that these robots will help companies design better products, improve how they work, and make up for the fact that there are not enough skilled welders. The companies will also be able to use AMIC’s special equipment and facilities to solve problems together.
This project will create about 20 new jobs, but the main focus is not just on jobs. It is about helping these companies stay competitive around the world. Many European manufacturers are facing tough competition from China, which is now making more advanced products like cars and batteries. Alan Donnelly from Four Dee said that working with AMIC will help them program the robots better and make their work more efficient. They hope to use computers to plan the robot’s work, which will save time and make their products more consistent. By working together, these companies want to build stronger businesses that can sell their products both in Northern Ireland and in other countries.
