Conflict between Israel and Hamas puts China’s approach to Middle East to the test

The recent conflict between Israel and Hamas is testing China's approach to the Middle East. Despite the escalating violence, analysts believe that China will maintain its stance and continue to support the establishment of a Palestinian state. Following Israel's declaration of a 'state of war' in response to an attack by Hamas militants, China, along with Russia, Turkey, and several Arab states, called for calm and restraint. The violence has already resulted in over 1,000 casualties. Unlike the US, India, and most countries in Europe, Asia, and Latin America, China has neither condemned Hamas nor expressed support for Israel. During an emergency United Nations session, China's ambassador Zhang Jun condemned all violence and attacks against civilians and urged all parties to refrain from attacking and destroying civilian facilities. This response aligns with China's long-standing policy of non-interference in foreign conflicts. However, Israel has criticized China's response, calling for a stronger stance. The recent attacks by Hamas, which targeted primarily civilians, were the most comprehensive assault on Israel since the Yom Kippur war 50 years ago. China's position has drawn attention due to the unique nature of the conflict in Gaza and the varying responses from different countries. Yan Wei, deputy director at the Institute of Middle Eastern studies at China’s Northwest University, emphasized that China has always supported the Palestinian right to establish an independent state. He argued that resolving the Palestinian issue is crucial for achieving lasting peace in the Middle East. The ongoing conflict also casts a shadow over Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's planned visit to China, which was expected to focus on strengthening ties and seeking Beijing's assistance in normalizing relations with Saudi Arabia.
