Young eco-activists call for school solar panels

At Brigstock Latham's Primary School in Northamptonshire, a group of Year 5 students have taken a strong stand for the environment by writing to their local MP, Lee Barron, asking for solar panels to be installed at their school. These young eco-activists believe that solar panels will help their school reduce its carbon footprint, save money on energy bills, and provide a better learning environment. Their letters were so powerful that Lee Barron brought their concerns to a Parliamentary debate, highlighting the importance of renewable energy in schools.

The students explained that even though their school is small, with about 15 children in each year group, they want to make a big difference. One student wrote, 'we may be a small school, but we can be big sometimes,' showing their determination to contribute to a greener future. The school itself expressed pride in their pupils, calling them 'courageous advocates for green energy and wanting to look after our planet. ' They also mentioned that they felt it was unfair that other schools had received government funding for solar panels while they had not.

Energy Secretary Ed Miliband praised the students for their incredible spirit and emphasized that young people across the country care deeply about environmental issues. He pointed out that the sun is a free and powerful resource that should be used more widely. The government has announced a £180 million fund to help hundreds of schools and hospitals install solar panels, and Brigstock Latham's Primary School hopes to benefit from this initiative. The school believes that installing solar panels will not only make them more sustainable but also save money that can be used to improve education and facilities.
