The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls, often called OWLAG, was opened almost 20 years ago near Johannesburg. Oprah started the school after meeting Nelson Mandela in 2002, hoping to give girls from underprivileged backgrounds a chance at a better future. The school was built in the village of Henley-on-Klip and cost about 40 million dollars. It is a boarding school, which means the students live there while they study. The campus is very impressive, with two theatres, a yoga studio, and a beauty salon. Some people thought the school was too luxurious, but Oprah wanted the girls to have the best opportunities.

According to Oprah's recent statement, the school will close at the end of the 2027 academic year. After that, the campus will be handed over to the local education authorities, as was planned from the start. Students who are still at the school and have not graduated will be given full scholarships to continue their education at other top schools.
