Old Barn Transforms into Vibrant Arts Hub in the Heart of Lake District

Nibthwaite Common Barn, a stone building from the 1840s, is about to become a new center for art and creativity in the Lake District. For more than 20 years, this barn stood empty and unused, but now it is being transformed into a community arts hub. The barn is located in High Nibthwaite, near Ulverston, and has a beautiful view of the Lake District through its five windows. A local family worked hard to get planning permission to change the barn into a place where artists and performers can gather, learn, and share their work. The project is expected to be finished by August, and after that, the barn will host workshops and even have a live-in artist.

The team working on the barn is focused on making the project as sustainable as possible. According to Daniel Livesey, who is in charge of the construction, they are reusing much of the original stone from the barn. They are also using Douglas fir wood that is grown in the UK, which helps reduce the environmental impact. Local craftsmen, such as stonemasons, are helping with the restoration, and all new materials for the roof and walls are being sourced from nearby suppliers. This approach not only helps the environment but also supports the local economy.

Jack Carter, an architect working on the project, said that even though the barn is not a huge building, turning it into an arts hub will have a big impact on the community. Once the barn is ready, it will be a place where people can come together to learn new skills, create art, and enjoy performances. The hope is that the barn will become a lively center for creativity and bring people in the area closer together. The project shows how old buildings can be given new purposes and how communities can benefit from working together to create something special.
