Wolverhampton Art Gallery Scores £100K to Boost Youth Creativity!

Wolverhampton Art Gallery, located in the West Midlands, has been awarded one hundred thousand pounds to expand its work with young people. The gallery is one of three winners of the first-ever Freelands Awards, which celebrate organisations that use creative and effective ways to teach art. The Freelands Awards were set up by the Freelands Foundation to recognise groups that make a real difference in art education, especially for young people. The gallery is housed in a beautiful Victorian building with marble pillars and a sign that reads 'art gallery. '

The judges chose Wolverhampton Art Gallery because of its two main youth projects. The first project, called ArtForum, is a free group for people aged fourteen to twenty-five. It gives young people the chance to get hands-on experience with art and learn new skills. The second project, MORE ART INC, is for new artists between sixteen and thirty years old. It helps them develop their creative talents and learn how to start a career in the arts. Both projects are free and open to young people from Wolverhampton and the surrounding areas.

Stephen Simkins, the leader of the City of Wolverhampton Council, said the award is a fantastic recognition of the gallery's work with young people. He explained that the gallery's youth programmes have opened doors for many young people, some of whom never thought art galleries were places for them. Now, these young people are starting exciting careers in the creative industries. The Freelands Foundation said that visual arts organisations are important for lifelong learning, even though they face challenges like less funding and higher costs. The three winning galleries will now work with the Freelands Foundation to make films about their programmes. These films will be shared with other organisations to help them support young people in art.
