Silk Science: How India’s Tech-Savvy Farmers Are Weaving a New Future

Dr Jolapuram Umamaheswari once worked as a scientist in Singapore, but six years ago she made a big change in her life. She returned to India, hoping to start something of her own. After doing some research, she decided to try silk farming, also known as sericulture. This job involves feeding mulberry leaves to silkworms, taking care of them, and then collecting their cocoons to get silk fibers. At first, things were not easy for her. She faced problems like silkworm diseases and not getting enough silk. There was a lot to learn about how to keep the silkworms healthy and how to manage the farm. But Dr Umamaheswari used her science background to solve these problems. She improved the way she cleaned the farm, fed the silkworms, and controlled the environment. Slowly, these small changes helped her get better results. Now, she produces ten batches of silk every year, with each batch taking about 25 to 30 days. She earns around one thousand dollars a month, which is a steady income. She says that silk farming is different from other types of farming because you can earn money regularly if you manage it well.

At Asho Farms, where Dr Umamaheswari works, technology is playing a big role in making silk farming better. Silkworms are very sensitive to changes in their environment, like temperature and humidity. In the past, farmers had to check these things by hand, but now there are sensors and machines that do it automatically. There are also cameras and computers that use artificial intelligence to spot sick silkworms early. This helps farmers remove the sick worms before they can infect the others. These new tools make it easier to get high-quality silk.

India is the second largest silk producer in the world, after China. India is unique because it produces all four main types of silk, including Muga silk, which is only found in certain parts of India. Scientists are working on making silkworms stronger and more resistant to disease by changing their genes. They are also finding ways to use the leftover parts of the silkworms as food for animals like chickens and fish. Some people worry that there are not enough farmers to keep up with the demand for silk, but new technology is helping farmers produce more silk from the same amount of land. Dr Umamaheswari is also planning to add cows to her farm. She hopes to earn extra money from selling milk, and she will use the cows' manure to help her mulberry plants grow better. She believes that even small improvements can make a big difference in silk farming, and she enjoys using her knowledge to solve problems and help her business grow.
