Labi Siffre's Gospel Choir Reunites for a Soulful Comeback Concert

The Highgate Gospel Choir from Birmingham has reunited after decades apart, bringing back memories of their time singing with Labi Siffre on his powerful hit 'Something Inside So Strong' in 1987. The choir, which began in the late 1970s, now has members living across the UK and even overseas. They have come together for a new album and a special concert in Birmingham, rekindling the spirit that made them famous years ago. Beverley Hepburn-Henderson, Kathy Hepburn-Hinds, Evadne Anderson, Avril Bartholomew, and Angela Brown-Johnson are some of the original members who said it felt natural to sing together again, as if no time had passed. Beverley traveled from Florida to join the reunion, expressing how meaningful it was to reconnect after more than 40 years.

The choir members grew up in Birmingham, where singing in church was a normal part of life. Their parents, who came from the Caribbean, faced challenges when they arrived in the UK but helped build Pentecostal churches and communities. Singing together not only brought the choir members closer but also helped them cope with difficult times. Angela Brown-Johnson, the youngest member, joined at age 15 and was amazed by the choir's energy and volume. She learned a lot from her experience and enjoyed being part of the group. The choir gained recognition after appearing on BBC's Pebble Mill At One in 1983, which led to their involvement with Labi Siffre's song. 'Something Inside So Strong' was inspired by the struggle against apartheid in South Africa and the fight against oppression, reaching number four on the UK charts.

Despite their success, the choir faced some obstacles. They were not allowed to perform on Top of the Pops because of a strict bishop, and when they did appear on BBC daytime television, they had to wear blouses they disliked. Still, the choir members are proud of their achievements and the impact of the song, which resonated with many people, especially those who experienced discrimination. The choir recently returned to the recording studio for a new album and performed a final concert in Birmingham. Donovan Hepburn, who has several siblings in the choir, organized the reunion as part of the Legacy Project. He said it was wonderful to see everyone together again and emphasized that age should not stop anyone from learning new things.
